at the south-eastern end of the island, Mahébourg was during a long
time the first city of the island.
Today it is a large village of approximately 20000 inhabitants, animated and
alive.
Tourism did not develop there as on the remainder of the island, which in
fact an authentic city, which knew to preserve a certain seal.
It is in bay of Mahébourg which the Dutchmen in 1598 unloaded.
The barrel city creates in 1806. It owes its name in Mahé of Bourdonnais,
of or the name of... Mahébourg. Although this last barrel especially

It is in bay of the Old man-Large Port that the French fleet only gained its
and single naval battle in the Indian Ocean, against English in 1810.
The city knew to keep some beautiful colonial residences, like the old residence
of the commanders of the district of Large Port, converted into museum of
the marine.
You will be able to admire there some interesting parts, the such bell of
the ship the Géran Saint like various objects, guns, old weapons, fished
out that and and maintained there within this historical framework.

The district still called Black City, is charming, with its small creole
houses of sea front, transformed into small inns or boarding houses. It reigns
in its streets in checkerwork drawn by the French colonists a peaceful animation,
between the gravers of the craftsmen, the shops of Indian saris and tailors,
the small itinerant traders, the market, the huts of fishermen and some vestiges
of colonial houses which often fall in ruin.
