Titanic was a 282 meters long 46,328 tons transatlantic liner that could
cruise at 25 knots. Built as 'Unsinkable', she was sub-divided by athwart
ships watertight hull heads designed to prevent extensive flooding should
her hull be pierced. Unfortunately, she side-swapped a massive iceberg off
the coast of Newfoundland. The berg sliced through her iron plating flooding
several compartments, dooming her to a watery grave on her maiden voyage from
Southampton to New York. Due to a deficiency of lifeboats on-board, only 651
of the 2207 passengers and crew she was carrying survived the tragedy.
The sinking of this great ship has kept the public interested for several reasons. The number of deaths, over 1500, was phenomenally large, and included celebrities and important people, such as the richest man in the world at that time. There were reports of a mystery vessel close by, which, if it had chosen to, could have saved all the people, and rewritten the history books. It did not. Captain Rostron’s heroic race to the scene of disaster aboard Carpathian is also legendary. The rediscovery of the wreck of the Titanic in 1985 by Dr. Robert Ballard’s team, and the subsequent making of a feature film in the late twentieth century, have helped to keep the tragedy in the forefront of many people’s minds.
